Azay-le-Rideau is marked by the Indre river, its green shores, its islands and its watermills.
A way to discover this river? On a bicycle on theCycling Indreroute, by walking on the island at Azay-le-Rideau, by hiking in Saché or Pont-de-Ruan, or why not, in summer, by taking a canoe trip in Azay-le-Rideau.
The country of Azay-le-Rideau also provides access to the wild and sumptuous Loire. The village of Bréhémont has kept its old docks from where the "gabares" left, these traditional boats that transported goods to the Atlantic.
On the other bank, at Langeais, you can take a trip on the Loire river on one ofEndremage's boats. This association maintains "toues", these traditional boats smaller than the "gabares".
There are about twenty watermills around Azay-le-Rideau. The one in the city center dates from the 17th century, with an extension from the end of the 19th century which equipped it for electricity production. It now houses a heritage exhibition on the city ... and a wine bar.
At Pont-de-Ruan, a few kilometers upstream, the watermill, restored and put back into working order, can be visited in summer.
